Fire blankets for vehicle and lithium battery fires
A vehicle fire blanket is a certified cover that smothers a car fire by cutting off oxygen, containing it within seconds and preventing spread to nearby vehicles or the building. Etron Parts & Tools distributes Bridgehill fire blankets, certified to DIN SPEC 91489 and EN 13501-1 Class A1, across the Americas.
Why an EV fire needs a different answer
A lithium-ion battery in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen and can reignite hours after it appears to be out. The water a workshop has on hand does not stop it.
A blanket does something an extinguisher cannot: it does not try to put the fire out, it isolates it. The fire burns itself out under containment while the building, the adjacent vehicles and the people stay outside the event.
One vehicle lost instead of a workshop.
What DIN SPEC 91489 requires, and what NFPA 701 does not
Published November 2024, DIN SPEC 91489 is the first standardised framework for certified EV fire blankets, developed with the automotive industry, fire departments and disaster-control experts.
NFPA 701 is a different thing. It is a flame-propagation test for hanging textiles — curtains, drapes, tent fabric. It describes how a fabric behaves in a flame. It says nothing about whether a blanket can contain a burning vehicle.
If a supplier offers NFPA 701 as their EV credential, ask what else they hold. Bridgehill blankets carry six certifications: DIN SPEC 91489, EN 13501-1 Class A1, EN ISO 1182, EN ISO 1716, ASTM D257 and NFPA 701-2019.
