ASE40535001000 — High Voltage Test Module VAS 6558A

$4350.00$3800.00

The VAS 6558A is the genuine high-voltage test module used for measurement and testing on hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric Volkswagen Group vehicles. It verifies absence of operating voltage, measures insulation resistance including to SAE J1766, and works step-by-step through Guided Fault Finding. Etron Parts & Tools supplies it from the USA.

The measurement that has to happen before anyone touches the pack

Before any work on a high-voltage system, the first task is proving the system is de-energised. Not switched off — proven de-energised, by measurement.

That is what "measuring the DC voltage (absence of operating voltage)" means, and it is not a formality. A high-voltage pack that reads zero at the service disconnect can still hold potential elsewhere in the system. The verification is the step that makes the rest of the job survivable.

What it measures

  • DC voltage — absence of operating voltage

  • Insulation resistance — calculated from current and voltage measurements

  • Insulation resistance to SAE J1766 — measured under load with a parallel resistor

  • Electrical resistance

  • Diode measurements

  • Potential equalisation — verifying the bonding that keeps exposed metal at chassis potential

Why SAE J1766 matters specifically

An insulation reading taken without load can look acceptable while a fault that only appears under load goes undetected. SAE J1766 specifies measurement under load with a parallel resistor, which is what exposes a degrading insulation path before it becomes a fault.

On a damaged or water-ingressed pack — the collision-repair case — this is the measurement that distinguishes a repairable vehicle from one that should not be re-energised.

Guided Fault Finding is a safety control, not a convenience

In the safety-relevant area of high-voltage equipment, the module ensures technicians can only perform measurement tasks step by step through the Guided Fault Finding function of the Offboard Diagnostic Information System.

The sequencing is deliberate. It prevents steps being taken out of order on a system where order is what keeps the technician alive.

Adapters are sold separately

The module needs vehicle-specific high-voltage test adapters, VAS 6558/XX, and those carry their own ASE numbers. Specify your vehicle coverage when requesting a quote and we will list the adapters required — a module without the right adapter cannot connect to the vehicle.

Where this sits alongside fire safety

A workshop equipped to work on high-voltage systems needs two things that are rarely bought together: the means to verify a pack is safe, and the means to contain one that is not.

This module is the first. A certified vehicle fire blanket is the second. Collision shops holding damaged EVs carry the highest exposure on both counts — a compromised pack can ignite days after the accident, while the vehicle sits in the bay.
